Heven AeroTech Doubles Its Workforce and Builds a Leadership Team to Match
Heven AeroTech has grown from 38 to 88 employees in months and just added four senior hires to push its hydrogen-powered Z1 drone deeper into the federal defense market.

The headline number is a 132% increase in headcount - from 38 full-time employees at the end of 2025 to 88 today. That kind of growth in under a year is worth pausing on, because it tells you something the press release alone doesn't: Heven AeroTech is no longer in the proving-ground phase. The Sterling, Virginia-based manufacturer of hydrogen-powered Unmanned Aerial Systems is scaling, and the four leadership appointments it announced on July 14 are the organizational infrastructure for that next stage.
The Appointments, and Why Each One Matters
The headline hire is Lexi Alexander as Chief Growth Officer. Alexander brings over 20 years of defense growth leadership, specializing in cyber warfare, AI data platforms, and secure logistics across federal and international markets. That profile matters for a company that already has a foot in the door with the U.S. Army but needs to navigate the full complexity of federal acquisition - and then replicate that process internationally.
The three supporting appointments fill specific technical and operational gaps that any serious defense manufacturer has to close before it can scale production:
Dr. Karen Swider-Lyons, VP of Hydrogen. Her résumé is unusually well-matched to the role. Swider-Lyons began flying fuel cell UAVs with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in 2004. That's not a recent convert to the technology - that's someone who was doing the foundational work before most of the current hydrogen-drone industry existed. At NRL, her team carried out much of the foundational work for fuel cell UAVs.
Samantha Hamilton, VP of AI. Former Director of Delivery at BigBear.ai, Hamilton brings over a decade of experience deploying AI/ML software for defense applications. The AI integration angle matters because Heven positions its platforms as AI- and quantum-enabled, not just hydrogen-powered. Hamilton is the person who has to make that claim operationally real.
Gaston Paz, Head of Manufacturing and Operational Strategy. Drawing on leadership experience at Airbus and Bombardier across aircraft production, industrialization, program execution, and configuration management, Paz will lead the development of Heven's global manufacturing strategy, scalable production systems, and operational infrastructure to support rapid growth and international expansion. Aerospace manufacturing at that scale is a different discipline from prototype production - and Paz's background is exactly the bridge Heven needs.

The leadership expansion doesn't happen in a vacuum. It follows a string of procurement milestones that have given Heven a structural position in U.S. military acquisition that most drone startups spend years trying to reach.
The Defense Innovation Unit for the first time added a hydrogen-powered unmanned aerial system to its roster of drones pre-vetted for rapid procurement and deployment by the U.S. military, with Heven AeroTech announcing that its Z1 drone has been certified for DIU's Blue UAS Cleared List. That certification matters because Blue UAS is a DOD initiative designed to help government users identify drone platforms that meet strict requirements for security and trusted technology, with the goal of reducing supply-chain and cybersecurity risk while giving agencies a faster, clearer path to procure drones that meet mission needs.
The Z1 is the only hydrogen-powered drone on the Pentagon's Blue UAS Cleared List, out of 40 systems on the roster. Of the 40 drones on DIU's list, the Z1 is the only system powered by transferring hydrogen into a fuel cell to create a chemical reaction and produce electricity.
That Blue UAS status then fed directly into a procurement vehicle. The U.S. Army awarded Heven AeroTech a Basic Ordering Agreement covering its Z1 hydrogen-powered unmanned aerial system, along with related hydrogen generation and refueling solutions, effective January 2026, establishing a framework that enables future orders for the procurement of these systems as operational requirements evolve.
The BOA is worth understanding carefully. It is a framework contract, not a funded order. As Heven AeroTech President of U.S. Operations Michael Buscher explained, "This BOA creates a standing procurement pathway, meaning the army can move much faster when a capability proves valuable in operational contexts." The distinction between a procurement pathway and actual procurement is one to keep in mind - the BOA reduces friction, but individual task orders still need to be issued and funded.
The Endurance Argument
The core technical case for hydrogen in defense UAS is not complicated, but it is worth stating precisely. Heven CEO Bentzion Levinson has noted that "short-range drones with batteries are great, but once you get to longer distances ... battery-powered drones aren't relevant, because there's no way to recharge them."
The physics back that up. A fuel cell system incorporating a compressed hydrogen tank can achieve a specific energy of around 1,000 Wh/kg, compared to up to 250 Wh/kg for lithium-polymer batteries. That four-to-one energy density gap is what makes hydrogen relevant for ISR, logistics, and persistent surveillance missions where battery swaps are impractical or operationally impossible.
As Heven has put it, "Hydrogen-powered systems offer extended endurance, logistical flexibility, and reduced dependency on traditional fuel and battery supply chains." The low acoustic and thermal signature is an additional tactical benefit - for defense and stealth applications, the low acoustic signature and extended endurance of hydrogen-powered drones offer tactical benefits that battery systems cannot match.
Heven's Z1 is rated for up to 10 hours of flight endurance with very low noise and heat signatures. Its larger Raider platform targets more than 10 hours of endurance, a 50-pound payload, and a range of up to 1,000 km — but those figures are manufacturer claims and should be evaluated against independently verified operational data as the platform matures.
The Broader Context: Defense Is Accelerating
The timing of Heven's expansion aligns with a genuine acceleration in Pentagon drone procurement. The Blue UAS Cleared List transition is aligned with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's directive to achieve "small UAS domain dominance" by the end of 2027. Last month, the Defense Department wrapped up another round of the Drone Dominance competition, a $1.1 billion program aimed at strengthening the domestic drone industry to supply commercially developed drones to the military.
Congress increased the Defense Innovation Unit's budget to nearly $2 billion as part of the push to accelerate domestic drone procurement. Congress increased the DIU budget to nearly $2 billion, while the Army is seeking to equip combat divisions with 1,000 drones each.
That policy environment creates real demand for exactly what Heven is building - domestically manufactured, Blue UAS-cleared, long-endurance platforms. The question is whether the company can scale manufacturing fast enough to meet it. Gaston Paz's appointment suggests Heven is at least asking the right question.
What to Watch
The leadership build-out is a credible signal of intent. Swider-Lyons, Hamilton, and Paz each bring domain expertise that a company at Heven's stage genuinely needs. Alexander's CGO role is the one that will determine whether the company can translate its technical position into a durable revenue base.
A few things remain worth watching closely. The BOA with the Army is a procurement pathway, not a funded program of record - individual orders still need to be placed and financed. International expansion, which Alexander is tasked with leading, will depend on export licensing and allied-nation procurement cycles that move on their own timelines. And the hydrogen supply chain for forward-deployed military operations - the refueling trailers, the generation equipment, the logistics - is still maturing alongside the aircraft themselves.

None of those caveats diminish what Heven has built. A Blue UAS-cleared hydrogen drone, a standing Army procurement vehicle, and now a leadership team with the depth to execute at scale - that's a more complete picture than most defense-adjacent hydrogen startups can show. The gap between announced capacity and fielded systems is still real, but the organizational infrastructure to close it is now in place.
